Devices and recovery

Add a phone or another browser, remove a lost one, and get back in if you lose every passkey.

Only a device your account key approved can open your machines.

  1. Sign in on the new device

Open Miko and press Sign in with passkey. Fill in Name this device.

On a shared computer, tick Public or shared computer. Miko forgets the device after 12 hours.

  2. Add it

If your passkey can unlock your account here, press Add this device. Nothing else to type.

If not, press Approve from another device or Use my recovery key.

  3. Review on your other device

It shows “… wants to join your Miko”. Press Review, or Not me.

Both screens show the same 6-digit number.

  4. Match the number

On the new device, press Same number. On the other, press Yes, approve. Approving uses your passkey.

If the numbers differ, press Different number or No, it's different.

A request lasts 10 minutes. If none of your devices is online, open Miko on one of them, or use your recovery key.

Your devices

Open Settings › Manage devices. Each row shows This device or when it was last seen, with Rename and Remove….

An account can have up to 20 devices.

Remove a device

Press Remove…, then Revoke. It uses your passkey.

The device is signed out and can't open your machines or get notifications. Agents keep running.

Your machines cut it off within about 2 seconds.

Lost or stolen

If it approved other devices, tick “Lost or stolen? Also revoke the devices it approved” when you revoke it.

Keeps your account key

Revoking this device replaces your account key. Save the new recovery key Miko shows; the old one stops working.

Lost keys

If Safari cleared this browser's data, Miko says “This browser lost the keys Miko kept for it.”

Press Add with my passkey, then revoke the old entry marked Lost keys.

This device's time is up

A public computer forgets your account after 12 hours. Press Sign in again to add it back.

Sign out

Press Sign out on this device at the bottom of Settings.

Create a recovery key

In Settings, under Recovery key, press Create recovery key.

Press Copy or Download as a file, type the key's last group, then press I saved it.

If you lose every passkey, it adds a new device at once. Without it, getting back in takes 3 days.

Keep it safe

Keep it offline. Anyone with it and your email can add a device to your Miko account.

Replace it

Press Make a new recovery key. The old one works until you confirm the new one.

Passkeys

Open Settings › Sign-in. Press Add a passkey, Rename or Remove.

Add a second one, on your phone or a security key, so losing a device never locks you out.

Change email

Press Change email, then enter the code Miko sends to the new address.

It asks for your passkey. Your old address is told.

Only allow passkeys

Email codes stop working. Losing every passkey then starts a 3-day recovery instead.

It needs a saved recovery key or a second passkey first.

Confirm it's you

Removing a passkey, a device or a machine, changing your email, exporting your data or deleting your account asks for your passkey again.

  1. Start recovery

On the sign-in screen, press Email me a code, then Lost your passkeys?.

Enter the code from your email, then press Start recovery.

Have your recovery key? Press Use it now to skip the wait.

  2. Wait 3 days

Miko tells all your devices and emails you first.

If it wasn't you, press Cancel recovery on any device, or use the cancel link in the email.

  3. Finish

On Welcome back, press Create passkey and finish. Save your new recovery key.

  4. Reconnect

On each server, run the command Miko shows: echo … | sudo miko-host pair --reset -. Agents there keep running.

Sign in to your connections again.

Remove a machine

On the machine card, open More › Remove from account…. It uses your passkey.

Your devices stop connecting to it. Agents keep running on the server.

To use it again, connect it again.

Export your data

Open Settings › Account › Export your data, then press Export.

You get one file with your account, devices, machines, connections, routines and notes. No keys, no passwords, nothing from your terminals.

Delete account…

Open Settings › Account › Delete account….

Your servers disconnect at once. Files on them stay; run sudo miko-host uninstall there to remove Miko.

Press Restore account within 7 days to undo it, or Delete now.

Coming soon

Continue with Apple: Settings › Sign-in shows Coming soon until Sign in with Apple is on.
